Reports to the Assistant Dean for First Year Programs in the Office of Academic Services (OAS) in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences Newark (FASN). As a member of a counseling team, provides academic advising and counseling to undergraduate students and assists them with problem solving and advocacy. Establishes and maintains contact with assigned caseload of Newark College of Arts & Sciences (NCAS) and University College-Newark (UC-N) students to counsel them and facilitate their declaration of major, progress toward graduation, and successful career and/or professional development. Works with the freshman team to assist with the coordination of all programs targeting freshmen including testing, orientation, registration and linked classes. Develops liaison relationships with faculty and other departments and contributes to transcript evaluation, advanced placement credit assessment, graduation certification, commencement activities, and any other special events as needed.
Requires a bachelor's degree preferably in student counseling or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of new student transition education for non-traditional student populations, student development, workshop design, and counseling theories and applications. Also requires two years of relevant experience in counseling, providing academic advisement, and conducting workshops for diverse populations. Must have demonstrated experience to mentor others; effective communication, interpersonal, organizational skills and computer literacy. Knowledge of databases and queries; master's degree and experience in an academic setting with experience in program development and teaching preferred.
This position will require the incumbent to work some evenings and weekends.
